New School Press Releases

by Kevin

The traditional press release is a marketing method of the past that isn’t really used much by Internet Marketers of today.

Why don’t Internet Marketers use press releases?

Because it’s considered an old school marketing technique that doesn’t have much relevance for individuals marketing themselves in this new age. Traditionally, press releases were written and distributed as a way to direct communication at reporters and other news media. It was in fact a release of information to the press. Today press releases are used for much more than that, especially for Internet Marketers.

What is a “New School Press Release” and how is it different from the old way of doing a press release?

A New School press release is written much the same way as a traditional one, but with some major differences. Below are some important differences that you should consider and reasons why you should be using press releases.

5 Reasons Why You Should Be Using New School Press Releases

  1. Get Your Message Out With A Buzz- Press Releases are a great way to get a message out to the web in a different style or format and direct traffic back to your website. If done right sites like Yahoo! News, Google News, Bloggers, and Journalists will pick up your release and distribute it to their readers. Also, with social media you can reach a lot of people with a click of a mouse.
  2. Target Your Buyers- Through your message you can target the buyers you seek and want to work with. You know what your message is, craft it into the press release format and give the readers a reason to click your link.
  3. Your Business Deserves Attention- Many times throughout the year you will have big decisions, accomplishments, or launches that deserve a big announcement. A press release is an inexpensive way to create buzz and drive traffic to your website. If you are excited about joining a new business, creating a new product, or some other big event, press release it.
  4. SEO Value- If you distribute your press release to the right sites, the seo value you get will be well worth the price you pay for distribution. Why? Press releases are seen as newsworthy events and get picked up by news sites that are seen as Authority sites, which search engines love. Also, when writing your release include tags, anchor text, your url, and keywords throughout. This helps you rank on search engines and gets you found by people searching. The back-links going back to your website from authority news sites is incredibly valuable.
  5. You Gain Credibility and Authority in Your Market- It’s a fact that press releases written in the third person are seen as credible and authoritative. Use this to your advantage! Make sure you write true facts about yourself and your business or product, but the fact that it is written in a press release format will gain you credibility. Credibility and authority are crucial pieces to building your brand and your traffic.

After you have written your press release, get it out to the masses. Below is a list of a few popular distribution sites.

Paid Distribution Sites:

  1. PRWeb.com- This is the site I use and like. Their distribution is great and it’s easy to set up.
  2. PR.com
  3. Businesswire.com
  4. PRLeap.com

Free Distribution Sites:

  1. Free-Press-Release.com
  2. 24-7PressRelease.com
  3. TheOpenPress.com
  4. PressMethod.com

There are hundreds more press release distribution sites in addition to the sites listed above. Do a Google search and you will see them all. Also, if you would like your press release to be written for you, some of these distribution sites can do that too or there are writers who specialize in writing releases. I hope you see the value in doing press releases. If you don’t, your competition on the keywords you’re targeting just might. You have big news…get it out there!

Hi Kevin,
Press releases are a marketing method I’ve never used before but I plan to do it at one point. Many professionals use press releases and they are a very powerful way to let people know about your offer.
This is something that can be easily outsourced (actually I think it would be wise to do so, there are people who are really great on writing them for a pretty low price for example on fiverr.com).
I really enjoyed reading this and thanks for the tips.
Have a great day,
George

Hey George,

fiverr.com is a great resource for having a press release written. The quality will vary, but it would even be a good idea to have one written and then re-write it to suit your needs.

Thanks for the comment!

Hi Kevin, I knew you were going to have a kabamm blog post when I got here. I’m a true, genuine PR man working in publicity “mainly” … I agree with a lot of what you have to say. The press releases of today are starting to be called “news releases” because they are not anymore intended just for the media outlets. There are so many people creating blogs/websites and needing content nowadays that it is NEWS for everybody, not just for the press. They help me promote my clients for sure. If anybody wants some tips on how to form a proper release, feel free to hit me up. Kevin, thanks for a Great Post, Brother! Keep it up! TSA here ;-)

I agree with you that press releases are probably very underused in our industry, yet the have so many great benefits as you have pointed out. I will definitely use press releases to generate some buzz for the launch of my new graphic design business soon. Thanks for the great information.

Hi Kevin
I have used press releases in the past, but not recently. Thank you for the reminder of how powerful a press release can be. The two things I remember most is that you need to write the press release in 3rd party and that you need to find an angle on your story to make it effective. Thanks again for the reminder.

Hi Louise,

Yes, you are absolutely right! You can also have your press release written for you if you are having trouble writing in the third person about yourself.

Thanks for the comment!

I’ve used press releases with great success both online and offline. In my private tutoring business, 1 simple press release netted me enough students to keep me busy every day. In my catering business, a press release brought more than 50 engaged couples to my wedding expo. Online, press releases keep my business in the news and create awareness for my upcoming book. I’ve recently seen one of my online news releases end up on a site in China!

Thanks for letting the world know how powerful news releases are…
