Building an online presence is the first step in starting your online business and it is a very important one. There are many reasons why, but the biggest reason is this: people want to join and work with individuals that they know, like, and trust. It’s simply the truth.
You are probably asking this question now… “How do I get a person to know, like, and trust me over the internet?” Well, it’s a process, but your “about me” page can get you moving in the right direction. This is how you should craft your “about me” page-
So, let’s break it down… Know, Like, and Trust-
Know- Give your reader a glimpse into your life. Where you’ve been, what you’ve done, and where you are going. Who you are, what you do, and why you do it, in a story format can be very powerful at letting your reader to get to know you and in many cases they will relate to some part of your story.
Like- This is where your story is real important. You have to craft your experiences, your reason why you keep pushing on, and your goals for the future, into a well written story. Talk about your struggles, your failures, as well as your successes and the things you overcame. Talk about the reason why you are willing to go through the struggles. It could be your family, to live the life of your dreams, etc… whatever gets you up in the morning. Remember to be yourself though. If you try and be someone you are not, it will be evident and people will end up disliking your story.
Trust- If you write your story in an authentic manner like we have talked about so far, trust will follow. If you are honest, transparent, and likeable in your about me page, your readers will trust you. Remember, gaining someones trust should not be taken lightly. Always lead your online business with honesty, integrity, and a willingness to serve others with these values.
Now that you have an idea of how you should write your “about me” page, there are some other things to consider as well in making the most effective “about me” page.
- Opening Paragraph- Introduce yourself and say something like “ Welcome to my personal website” and thank them for taking the time to learn more about you. Next, start to set up the problem you were facing and include your reason “WHY” you started your online business. Starting any type of communication with the reason “WHY” is powerful and will get peoples attention.
- Problem and Solution- Make sure to establish the problem and then give the solution you found. Examples of problems that you may have faced could be; overcoming negative thoughts, tired of the 9-5 corporate job, wanting more out of your life, not enough time with family, etc…
- Call to Action- Offer help and tell your reader what you want them to do next. It could be an invite to work with you, to call you, connect on facebook, visit your blog, etc…
- Pictures- How many times have you heard a picture paints a thousand words? This is absolutely true. Pictures are amazing, and can convey things words just can’t. People connect with pictures. Place pictures of you, your family, and your pets having fun throughout your page. Convey that you are a real person living a great life!
- Design- Don’t overdo your “about me” page with loads of graphics, flashy animations, or pop up opt-in forms. The main goal is to get the person to read your story and not get distracted. Let your story shine on the page. Headlines are also very important. You need to break up your story into bite size paragraphs to keep the readers interested
Your “about me” page can go a long way in helping you build your brand, online presence, and establishing yourself as an authority figure in your business. Once this foundation is built, like-minded people will read your story and seek you out to work with.

Sounds like great advice Kevin. It never ceases to amaze me when I come across a blog where the blogger hides his identity – and yet expects his readers to trust him/her enough to follow his advice!

This is good stuff Kevin. The “About Me” page is very important, you really need to do a good job with it. If someone clicks to view it, it means they want to know more about you. You want to make a good impression. I like the way you’ve broken down the steps here.

Kevin,
Certainly some good points on creating a likeable About Me page. How do you feel about doing a short video to introduce yourself? I’ve always struggled with video, resisted, didn’t want to…. and posted my first 3 minute video on my blog yesterday. I think video would be a real good way to judge know, like and trust.
Happy 2012!

You have some good tips here. Telling your stories is very important for helping people to get to know you and building trust.
Hey Kevin,
I don’t have a strong about me page yet. I just throw it together quickly so I have some “text” there too.

I think it’s time to ramp up my game a little bit. This post so good that I gotta use it as backbone of my about me page structure .
I really appreciate the insight!
Ps: I think too that being authentic is a key ingredients for self branding. It is SELF branding after all

I have been blogging over a decade and fitting my story is nearly a novel worth of words…rofl. At WordCamps that I speak at, people ask me about how I got into WordPress. I always say, “Um, do you have like 5 to 10 minutes for the short version? I’ve been using WordPress since the b2 days, but blogging well before even that!”
I’ve decided after some urging to put together a book on the Evolution of Blogging from my viewpoint as I have seen a lot of things in the blogging community.
However, in general, your site should have something about you and also the purpose of your website. You should consider breaking this post into more in-depth on each of the points you cover…just a thought.
Hey Kevin,
Nice to be back here. It is funny I have heard a lot about this in the past few days. Especially about telling stories in emails. I think when we tell our story we capture the attention, we become ‘real’ and trust worthy and it is almost a way to make ourselves more authentic.
Thanks for some great tips on improving my about me page.
Regards,
Beth
That’s a great outline to get started or in my case restarted. The need to get people to know who you really are is so important if you want them to follow you.
Know, Like, and Trust is so important to network marketing or any other business model on the net. You can create reivew sites, but if the reader has never heard of you they are not going to buy. You can create a network marketing site, based on the attraction marketing model, to build that relationship with people. Then you get what I get, people calling me asking to join my business.
Hi there Kevin
I totally agree. People buy into people … so if you are offering truth and likability plus offering useful support for members and customers then you have the foundation for a strong business.
You explain these principles really well.
Thanks
Pete
Thank You Kevin
I had to read your post again, I wanted to copy and paste it for learning reference, You have a got a great looking about me. I will be working on mine.
Again thank you

Hello Kevin,
I haven’t looked at my about me page in a little bit.. but you have given me a couple ideas that I can work on to improve it.. Thanks for the great article and I like the 5 things that you have listed to consider .
Hey Kevin,
This a great post. One thing I learned, after many failures, is that is really doesn’t matter what program you are in or product you are selling. What matters is YOU the person. If you want to succeed in network marketing, then you need to sell yourself and not the program. Find out what they need or want and show them how you can get that for them. Therefore, in order to do this, they have to trust you. Your advise on showing them that you are an ordinary person with no special skills but with some of the same needs and wants. Good job.
Thanks,
Don
Hi Kevin,
You brought out some great tips here. I never paid much attention to my “About Me” page, but you’ve brought it to my mind. I can see how this would certainly increase the “know, like, and trust” for someone who simply lands on my website or blog without knowing anything about me. Thanks for discussing something that I haven’t seen anywhere else!
I appreciate your suggestions. I think that we all want to create client trust. We all know that customers and clients work with people they know, like, and trust. Some people really have the know, like trust factor dialed in very well and they tend to captivate people from the word “go”.
Kevin, A wonderful post with pertinent information on how to craft an About Me story. I feel some are better at this and can easily write it out. For me, it takes great thought and time to truly figure out what you want to say and how. I think the main thing is to be real and authentic and not try to be someone you are not. Plus, as time goes by, I think you realize more about who you are and what you want to accomplish and your story can change.
All in all, your post is the best I’ve seen on the subject!
Lynn
